I found this story only okay. Yes it was well written, but while I was reading it I kept thinking do I really care what happened to Elizabeth and why she disappeared. I thought the clues and the detecting was light and it didn't seem like much was revealed to come to the conclusion of who did what. There was more about the Bronte sisters and their relationships and how some of them are a little childish. If there are more in this series, I doubt I will read them. Just wasn't a wow for me.I found this story only okay. Yes it was well written, but while I was reading it I kept thinking do I really care what happened to Elizabeth and why she disappeared. I didn't mind this book. I liked Agnes how snarky and quick witted she is. What I didn't like about her is how she kept defending her narcissistic husband Trevor even though he was trying to ruin her. Trevor was crazy. I also liked Agnes' sister Fin. She was a great character. I'm sure there are Hollywood types like this couple and it's sad that people would treat each other the way Trevor treated Agnes. There were eye rolling times, times when I thought seriously, but there were also times I laughed. I found it entertaining. This is a fun romance. Lots of diverse characters, funny dialog, and the typical romance story. I thought the proposal was funny and whenever I see a proposal happening at a baseball game, in such a public place, I always wondered what would happen if the girl said no. This is not a heavy book. Not a deep book. It's a light romance that is a great read for the beach or if you just want to lose yourself in a story and not have to think too hard. This is a fun romance. This was a fun addition to The Wedding Date series. I liked how Maddie and Theo were not fans of each other but have a chemistry they can't ignore. My husband and I were the same way. We met in college and I did not like him in the beginning. He was obnoxious and rude. Now we have been married for 31 years. So you never know. The writing was fun, the characters had a lot going on with Theo's rally and Maddie trying to get a TV show along with Alexa and Drew's wedding planning. There were laughs, tears and a LOT of pizza. It seemed like every time they ordered food it was pizza. Theo loved roasted garlic and Maddie liked pepperoni and black olive.

Royal Holiday is another great addition to The Wedding Date series This time we focus on Vivian, Maddie's Mom. We got to know Maddie from book three. This time she is flying to England to be a stylist for the Duchess of Sussex and has invited her Mom to spend the holidays with her. Vivian meets Malcolm, the personal secretary to the Queen and they hit it off smashingly. Nothing like a fling and flirtation while on vacation. They spend quality time together and feelings fly. This was a sweet story with some good old courtship when Malcolm and Vivian write notes back and forth between the two houses, which are hand delivered. There are some funny parts, serious parts and of course romantic parts. I found Royal Holiday a very enjoyable read.Royal Holiday is another great addition to The Wedding Date series This time we focus on Vivian, Maddie's Mom. We got to know Maddie from book three. The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell is one messed up story. But in a good way. What happened in the house 25 years ago is just creepy and weird. Lisa did a great job of highlighting how one person or two can manipulate weaker minds into submitting to what they want, creating a cult like setting. How it affected the children is also interesting. There are a few twists and revelations and the book left me with some questions and wanting more. What an interesting concept if Anne Frank had survived the Holocaust. David Gillham does a great job taking the reader through Anne's life before the war, during and after. The book is heartbreaking. What Anne and her family went through during the war, finding out who turned them in and how she and her father after the war dealt with what happened to them and how it affected their relationship and the relationship with their friends from before the war. I wish that Anne's life had ended up this way. What an interesting concept if Anne Frank had survived the Holocaust. This was so good! I don't know why I waited so long to read it. I listened to the audiobook and it was easy to follow along even though it switched between 3 different women. I got to know the accents so I knew which woman's story I would be hearing about. I always love learning about WWII and the Holocaust. The more we know the better. This time I learned about the "rabbits" the women who were experimented on by the Nazi's. We also learned about a female doctor who did the surgeries and about a woman in New York working at the French Embassy trying to help with the war. This story is heartbreaking but also parts are uplifting how the women fight and support each other. They didn't give up. The author notes were also fascinating how she did her research and what she found. I knew about the rabbits but I hadn't read anything about them. Lilac Girls makes me want to learn more about the horrific surgeries and the women who endured them. This was so good! I don't know why I waited so long to read it. I absolutely love anything written by Darynda Jones. A Bad Day for Sunshine is another hit. There is suspense, humor, romantic attraction and witty dialogue. Sunshine and her daughter Auri have a great Mother/Daughter relationship. I like that Sun calls Auri Bug Bite. Quincy and Sun's relationship is almost dysfunctional. They have been best friends forever and they are more like brother/sister. Then there is the relationship between Sun and Levi. Steamy! Lots of interesting characters. The build up at the beginning, so we get to know everyone's backstories, is the right amount of time. Darynda does a great job of keeping the reader guessing what is happening to Sybil. You really have no clue until the end. I can't wait to see what happens next with Sunshine and Auri. Especially with Sunshine and Levi.I absolutely love anything written by Darynda Jones. I'm a big dystopia fan. The what ifs about how our world will look in 10, 20, 30 or even 100 years fascinates me. Will our world be destroyed and everyone has to go back to living without technology. Will our world be filled with the most advanced technology around or will there even be a world left to sustain life.
In Vox, we see a scary kind of future. One where a crazy religious zealot has the ear of the President convincing him women should be silenced. Women are second class citizens and should lose all their rights. They no longer have free will to talk and are limited to 100 words a day. Speak more and you are zapped, keep going, and you could fry to death. Work? Read? Make a phone call? Forget it. All rights are gone. All women are good for is to cook, clean, and rear children. If you are gay, forget it. You are locked into a prison until you "convert" to heterosexual. Have an infraction? You are sent off to hard labor working farm or clean fish for a living. No males in your family to take care of you. Head the farm or worse yet, be shipped off to a "pleasure house" for the men who can afford to visit.
This didn't happen over night. Slowly rights were taken away then with one executive order... That is one thing that scared the crap out of me reading this story. With the current nutcase in the White House with the super religious sidekick who calls his wife Mother, you don't know what could happen. Look at how the white supremacists are rising in this country and now around the world. Their voices are slowly growing as people of color are being shot and killed for no reason. We are living in a scary world right now and sometimes it feels like we can't stop the rollercoaster we are strapped into. That is what I felt like listening to this book. I didn't get from the author that she was blaming all Christians. I do think it only takes one to start and brainwash people and make them think differently. Look at Steven. He is 17-years-old and starts to "drink the kool-aid" of what is being shoved down their throats in school.
I don't care what other reviewers think of this book. Forget that the author implies all Christians cause this. Look at what is going on in this country and then ask yourself, could something like this happen?I'm a big dystopia fan. This book is very relevant with what is happening right now in the news. Evan is from a rich family. Alma’s family takes care of the yard. Evan and Alma go to the same school. Evan is a senior and Alma is a junior. Sparks fly immediately between them. Her Dad doesn’t want Alma to see Evan. Evan’s family would be furious to see Evan with someone below their status. Evan’s uncle is a US Senator who believes in catch and release. Catch the “illegals” and release them back to Mexico. Soon there is an ICE raid on the chicken factory and lots of Alma’s relatives and people in the neighborhood are rounded up. Alma knows she needs to stay away from Evan because of his uncle but soon trusts him that she is an undocumented person. Evan and Alma’s brother play soccer together and become close. This book is all about a love that is so strong it is tested with all the obstacles thrown up in their way. This book shines a spotlight on how the undocumented live in fear of being caught. They are hardworking people contributing to their community. We need to figure out the immigration issue so that undocumented immigrants who are contributing to their community, living a nonthreatening life can live here without fear of being deported. It’s really sad to me that there are kids who are living like this. That their parents think they need to stockpile gas and guns and then don’t give their children a proper education so when the kids go out into the world they are lost about world events like the Holocaust. And some who don’t try to get a better education so they are dependent on their parents for a way to make a living and get even further brainwashed about what the world actually is like. Tara is nothing like her family. She wants more and wants to learn more. I feel for her situation and I’m glad she was strong enough mentally to leave her family to get an education. This is a great memoir to learn about those families who feel they need to be survivors against the government. Who live pretty much off the grid. I will say, don’t listen to this audiobook a month after listening to Kristin Hannah’s The Great Alone. Same narrator and the stories are too similar. This is such a powerful, heartbreaking story. We all have seen news stories about unarmed black men gunned down by police. We have seen the way the level of hate in this world has escalated. This story brings the reader into the lives of those directly affected when a young, innocent black man is shot and killed by a white police officer. You feel the fear, frustration, anger and sadness of those involved. One thing the author wrote that sticks with me is you don't have to be black to care, you just have to care. This is a very dark and grim AND bloody story. It wasn't what I usually read but it didn't turn me away with how brutal it was. I also know this is a time and place I would not like to live. Tomas and his brother Jochan Piety come back to their home and all their property has been taken. So they kill to take back what was theirs and Tomas becomes the crime boss he once was before the war. They have to go in hard and fast with the blades swinging. Tomas' second in command isn't called Bloody Anne for nothing. This is well written and the reader gets to know the characters. Because it was so bloody, I didn't have too much sympathy for any of the characters and didn't care if any of them lived.
