Their task was to locate an immense hoard of Inca gold lost for hundreds of years in a remote and mysterious mountain range above the Amazon. The treasure was no El Dorado but had really existed. What is more, a botanist recently returned from Ecuador had provided the mariners with documents that proved it.
In Valverde's Gold, Mark Honigsbaum attempts to unravel a riddle that has obsessed men for centuries and has led to many frustrating and fatal treasure hunts. As a journalist and historian, Honigsbaum is at first reluctant to believe in the treasure. But when he delves into the botanist's life and discovers an ancient Spanish treasure guide in his notebook, he cannot help but be drawn into the mystery.
In his quest for the truth Honigsbaum travels to Ecuador where he meets a bizarre array of playboys, arms dealers and secretive priests, all of them infatuated by a treasure that has eluded men for 500 years. Battling through conflicting documents, he learns of ancient Inca roads and mines, and - as fact and fiction merge - hears of the petrified remains of a redheaded explorer. But at the heart of his enquiry and always before him is the challenge of crossing one of the last uncharted ranges in Latin America: the fearsome Llanganati mountains fo eastern Ecuador.
As a ransom for his king, an Incan general leaves a hoard of gold for the Spanish conquistador Pizzaro. In mysterious circumstances the gold disappeared, leaving behind only its legend and a map. Mark Honigsbaum embarks on an epic journey in order to unravel this myth.
