The year is 1954. U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule, have come to Shutter Island, home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient. Multiple murderess Rachel Solando is loose somewhere on this remote and barren island, despite having been kept in a locked cell under constant surveillance. As a killer hurricane bears relentlessly down on them, a strange case takes on even darker, more sinister shades--with hints of radical experimentation, horrifying surgeries, and lethal countermoves made in the cause of a covert shadow war. No one is going to escape Shutter Island unscathed, because nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is what it seems. But then neither is Teddy Daniels.

Well written and suspenseful. I can usually see "twists" coming a mile away but did not predict this one.

Very well crafted. Even if I saw the movie (twice), the intrigue was still there and kept me on my toes till the very end.

Haven't seen the movie, but this was pretty good. There's not much I can say without spoiling the plot, but if you like thrills and twists this is worth a try.

The twists and turns in this novel will leave you intrigued and amazed as well as keenly aware that things may not always be what they seem.

I love Dennis Lehane, but I found this book boring and stopped at page 28. Too wordy.

Even though the book (and the movie) have been around a while, I wasn't familiar with the story - or even this author - so I got to experience the great pleasure of being caught completely by surprise by the ending. This was the real fun of the book: the pages through which my mind was in denial, the pages when I was baffled about what to believe and the pages that had me reliving the whole story to fit the pieces together from a completely different perspective. Delicious.

A well constructed story from an excellent author. Fast paced and interesting with many plot turns. Definitely worth reading.

This book blew me away! There were multiple plot twists! Don't read about the book in Amazon! There is always a clown that gives away key aspects of the book! I didn't see any of this coming...I was stunned and speechlees when I finished the book. I loved it! Mystic River is very good, too!

Fast-paced & gripping thru numerous twists & turns. My book group read this recently, & it generated a lot of discussion on issues like PTSD & treatment of the mentally ill. Still, I got to the end feeling as though the author had played something of a dirty trick on me.

Wow. I just discovered what an amazing writer Dennis Lehane is this year after reading Mystic River. The Beacon Hill branch had this book on their "Staff Recommends" shelf and I noticed the author, then the title. I didn't know he also wrote Shutter Island (and Gone, Baby Gone). If you're like me, you've seen the movies of his books but didn't know how amazing the books are. Do yourself a favor and read him. Shutter Island is a fascinating tale of surpise, intrigue, government conspiracy, and insanity all taking place on a dark and lonely island. The way he puts words together makes me stop sometimes and reread it just for the pleasure of treating my brain again to the gift of the sound of those syllables together.
