Dr. Lorrimer appeared to be the picture of a bloodless, coldly efficient scientist. Only when his brutally slain body is discovered and his secret past dissected does the image begin to change. Once again, Chief Inspector Adam Dalgliesh learns that there is more to human beings than meets the eye -- and more to solving a murder than the obvious clues.

"Holy Mother of God dinner's ready." This is the punch line of a funny story about a village stage production.
As usual James takes time and effort with her mysteries.

Enjoyed this. A good read definitely not a speed read.

Too many characters mar this splendid mystery--I felt like I should be keeping a list. Some are very well rounded, some cardboard. It's the second one pairing Dalgliesh with another detective, not quite the "team" that later forms. The two work well together most of the time, but when they don't, they really don't, adding interest. The setting, a forensic lab in the East Anglia fens, is instructive, if dangerous. Dalgliesh's interest in architecture, especially of old churches, plays an important role here.
