Whether in the home or in the public arenas of media, work, sports, politics, art or religion, women often become embroiled as subjects in the political, social, and cultural debates in America. People on all areas of the political landscape see women in diverse and conflicting ways—as either too liberated or not liberated enough, or whether and how gender and sexual roles are rooted in either biology or culture. Battleground: Women, Gender, and Sexuality helps readers navigate contemporary issues and debates pertaining to women's lives in the United States and globally. Despite legal gains over the past half century, women still receive lower salaries than men and do most of the housework. Lind (women's studies, University of Cincinnati) and Brzuzy (social work, Xavier University) have compiled this reference manual to review issues of gender, giving their history and current status. The two-volume set contains articles by a number of experts on topics ranging from economic situations, sexuality, perceptions of women in the media, health issues affecting women, and religion, among others. The editors certainly agree with the statement that "women's bodies are a battleground," however the articles are even-handed, focusing on how various issues affect women.
