Essays in this collection investigate LGBTQ people and communities in terms of social work practice and education in Canada. Essays in the first section offer critical reflections on tensions within and among LGBTQ communities in Canada. Part 2 applies different theoretical perspectives to oppressive agency policies and social work practices affecting LGBTQ populations. Part 3 considers LGBTQ students and social work pedagogy in the classroom and other educational settings; this section includes drawings by transgender social work students expressing their feelings of isolation. Some subjects addressed include queer black youth, queer disability, trans women and women’s social services, gay caregiving, child welfare practice with sexual minority and gender-diverse youth, and the role of the social worker in trans health care. The book’s readership includes students, scholars, educators, and practitioners in social work, counseling, nursing, equity studies, gender studies, LGBTQ studies, and queer studies.
