This novel was unexpectedly disturbing, if not, heart-breaking -- even more so when you know it's based on the author's own experiences! I love how Galante focused on these two very different girls, and had two different fonts used for their narration.

There were a handful of twists and turns towards the end of the book. I also applaud the author for not adding an unnecessary romance sub-plot, and the primary focus being Agnes and Honey's relationship.

I went into this, thinking it was more of a children's/middle grade book, but a story about a couple of children being driven away from a religious commune that has them endure cruel punishments isn't something you would want to read to your 7-year-old.
