Old cowboy Concho Smith finds himself under suspicion when the crippled husband of Judith Van, a woman whose ranch he has been working at, dies in a fire.
Concho Smith, an old cowboy lamenting the end of the cattle drive era, is riding down to Mexico hoping to find work there. On his way, he sees a beautiful woman trying single-handedly to keep her ranch running and offers to help repair her fencing that had been knocked down by a storm. As days turn into weeks, Concho learns that Judith Van is married to Sid, a proud but bitter cripple. Unfortunately, Concho has already fallen in love with Judith and now -- for better or for worse -- sees himself as her savior.
When Judith and Sid's house burns down one night while Judith is with Concho, and Sid's body is found in the debris, questions that could put a noose around Concho's neck are raised . . .
