Cameron Reddie and his Dad are rent-a-relatives. Their clients pay them to pose as family members. Cam’s fairly happy with this life. He basically says as little as possible and no one figures it out. But then he gets two new clients: Albertina, an elderly lady with a mission to complete at all costs, and Raylene, who has a painful secret. If Cam wants to help them overcome their burdens, he may have to do the one thing he has never before done as a part of his job: be himself.
Vicki Grant’s novel is short enough to avoid dragging on, yet long enough for it to be sufficiently entertaining. It’s simple enough to understand, but always keeps the reader guessing as to what’s going to happen next. The characters are so different from themselves and the normal, but for the most part, they get along in a way that makes sense to the reader. It deals with some “deep” themes but keeps things light and funny. “Short for Chameleon” is entertaining in a way that’s unmatched by most other books I’ve read, but it’s still a worthwhile way to pass the time.
