On May 7, 1945, the German army surrendered at Rheims, France, bringing an end to the European theater of World War II. The ceasefire was to take place on May 8, which then became known as Victory in Europe (VE) Day. VE Day celebrations were particularly festive in Britain, where thousands of people turned out in London to see the royal family and Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
