Fear of a legion of Nazi spies and saboteurs in the United States led the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) to conduct more than 19,000 inquiries into alleged Axis espionage during World War II. While no widespread Nazi presence was ever found, FBI agents did charge several Americans with sedition for their display of Nazi sympathies. Following the war, the FBI directed much of its attention to investigating possible communist connections among members of the U.S. government and American media.
