After the United States' entrance into World War II, the Office of Price Administration (OPA) instituted a ration system for a number of goods. Tires were rationed when the importation of rubber from Asia was cut off by the war with Japan. Shoes, foodstuffs such as butter and coffee, and gasoline were also heavily rationed, to prevent shortages on the front lines. Although the rations were effective, they were never popular among the U.S. population, newly flush with expendable income generated by the war economy.
