Lou Gehrig was one of the best-known baseball players of the 1930s. In June 1939 his career with the New York Yankees was cut short when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, later known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He was forced to retire from baseball and died two years later.
