President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Act in 1933 in an attempt to revitalize the mostly poor rural area. Employees of the TVA dammed the Tennessee River, which helped with flood control and turned the river into a viable shipping channel. Although the TVA accomplished other tasks, its main focus was bringing electrical power to the millions in the region who lived without it. From 1933 to 1945 the TVA extended the reach of electricity from 2 percent to 75 percent of farms in the Tennessee Valley.
