In 1926 a U.S.-backed Conservative government led by Adolfo Diaz assumed power in Nicaragua after civil war between the Liberals and Conservatives broke apart earlier Nicaraguan governments. Frustrated by U.S. interference, Liberal leader Bautista Sacasa, with Mexico's aid, established an alternate Liberal government in Nicaragua. In response, President Calvin Coolidge authorized the sale of arms to the Conservative government and sent in 2,000 marines to quell the rebellion. A U.S.-supervised election took place in 1928, and Sacasa's general, Jose Maria Moncada was elected president. However, forces led by another Liberal rebel, Augusto Cesar Sandino, refused to recognize the election and continued the guerilla rebellion against U.S. troops until their withdrawal in 1933.
