During Russia's 1917 February Revolution, the czar abdicated and the monarchy was effectively dissolved. A provisional government was put into place. However, during the October Revolution (1917), the Bolsheviks, under Lenin's leadership, overthrew the provisional government and seized control of Russia. (This act is also known as the November Revolution, due to the discrepancy between Russia's Julian calendar and the newer Gregorian calendar). For 70 years following the October Revolution, the Bolshevik Party (later called the Communist Party) ruled Russia.
