American Nurses Demonstrate Gas Masks Ca. 1917Unknown - 1917
During World War I, the use of chemical weapons such as chlorine and mustard gas became commonplace, killing nearly 100,000 people. Because this degree of chemical warfare had never been experienced, troops were initially at a loss as to how to protect themselves. In makeshift trenches, American nurses equipped with gas masks performed demonstrations on what to do if enemy troops deployed chemical weapons.
