The Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) marked the first time in modern history that an Asian country defeated a European power. Concerned about Russia's growing influence in southeast Asia, Britain and Japan formed the Anglo-Japanese Alliance in 1902. In this pact, each country pledged support to the other if it went to war with more than one enemy. The effect of this was to keep Russia's ally, France (which could not match Britain's superior navy), from entering the conflict. This video shows British trawlers that were shelled by the Russians during the Russo-Japanese War.
