Many European immigrants who entered the United States through Ellis Island soon settled in New York City, and they began to form strong ethnic communities that allowed old world traditions to survive. On the Lower East Side of Manhattan, several Jewish and Italian immigrants began to sell fruit, vegetables, and other items from pushcarts that lined the streets. These pushcarts were often the first entry into the American marketplace and later served as a springboard to other industries.
