Before the development of the automobile, transportation within large cities often relied on horse-drawn carriages, trains, and cable cars. The construction of the first subway system in the United States, in Boston in 1897, spurred other large cities on the East Coast to build their own systems. These, and other means of public transportation, allowed city residents to spread out and provided a catalyst for a tremendous expansion in urban areas.
