U.S. Military Attacks Iraqi Targets in Operation Desert Storm Ca. 1991
On August 2, 1990, Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein invaded the neighboring nation of Kuwait, and the United States organized an international military coalition known as Operation Desert Shield, which prepared to defend nearby Saudi Arabia. When Saddam Hussein refused to relinquish Kuwait by the United Nations' deadline, the United States and its allies launched Operation Desert Storm, an offensive strike led by General Norman Schwarzkopf. Using both air and ground strikes, the operation was successful in a matter of days, and Iraqi troops withdrew from Kuwait on February 26.
