This is a good, touching, movie. There is an especially skillful and innovative sequence of images about half an hour into the film.

An authentic and touching story of a boy, and how he watches his life and family change. Children can't tell the difference between the public and private lives of the adults around them. For them, it's all the same thing. Adults have to manage both aspects of their lives and that's sometimes what makes being an adult challenging. How you prepare a child to become an adult is at the heart of this film. It's a difficult topic but De Sica handles it admirably, with a natural touch for letting actors and camera flow openly, letting the audience connect the dots of subtleties that are sprinkled throughout - condo boards, photobombs, bocce games and nosy neighbours, to name a few. I have a great respect for films without artifice - enjoy this one, although be prepared with a handkerchief if you are the tearful type.
