In 1901 English businessman William Knox D'Arcy began prospecting for petroleum in Persia (modern Iran). The founding of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (the forerunner of British Petroleum, or BP) in 1909 marked the beginning of Western dependence on Middle Eastern oil reserves.
