Ronald Reagan, the governor of California and a former actor, took the presidential oath of office on January 20, 1981. He had defeated former president Jimmy Carter in the 1980 election by focusing on the nation's high levels of unemployment and inflation, and famously asked the country "Are you better off today than you were four years ago? " Along with a new Republican majority in the Senate, Reagan set out to massively increase the nation's defense spending and institute an economic policy known as Reaganomics.
