During the 1980s, the debate on the effectiveness of gun laws in the United States was divided between those who argued for strict gun control and those who felt such laws were a violation of the Second Amendment. President Ronald Reagan argued against additional gun control laws and deemed them unenforceable, and in 1986 signed a bill that relaxed some of the provisions of the Gun Control Act of 1968.
