An oil embargo undertaken by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) lead to greatly increased gas prices and gas shortages in the United States. Many gas stations were forced to temporarily close after they sold all of their gas reserves, and several states instituted new policies that governed when and where consumers could buy gas.
