In 1965 Mount Kennedy was named in honor of the late president John F. Kennedy. Located in Canada's Yukon territory near the Alaskan border, the mountain was chosen to honor President Kennedy because, at the time, it was the tallest unclimbed peak in North America. That same year, a National Geographic team that included President Kennedy's younger brother, Robert, climbed the mountain. Robert was assassinated three years later during his own presidential bid.
