On June 13, 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson nominated Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court. After the Senate confirmed his nomination on August 30, 1967, Marshall became the first African American to sit on the Court. During his 24-year tenure, Marshall consistently ruled in favor of expanded civil rights and civil liberties.
