In 1926 the Firestone Company bought over one million acres to create its own rubber supply plantation in Liberia. The rubber harvested from this plantation proved crucial for the Allies during World War II, but had little positive impact on Liberians. That, in combination with the poor working conditions has led some to question the effect of the rubber industry on Africa.
