In 1925 the German war hero Paul von Hindenburg returned to public life for the second time to run for the presidency of the Weimar Republic. In April 1925, Hindenburg narrowly won the election, at the age of 77. A stout monarchist, Hindenburg saw himself as merely a placeholder for Kaiser Wilhelm II's return to power. However, he underestimated the ambitions of Adolf Hitler, referring to him as "that Bohemian corporal" and did not take the future leader seriously until it was too late, allowing Hitler to easily gain control of the republic and reshape it into the Third Reich.
