Smyrna Burns After Capture by the Turkish Army Ca. 1922Unknown - 1922
On September 9, 1922, a Turkish siege succeeded in expelling the last vestiges of the Greek army from the Turkish city of Smyrna. Four days after the Turkish army gained control of Smyrna, a fire broke out that devastated a large swath of the city. Both sides accused the other of starting the fire that contributed to the refugee crisis as Armenian and Greek refugees fled from both the Turkish army and the raging blaze.
