In 1922 Mohandas Gandhi was arrested by Great Britain and sentenced to six years in prison for his seditious nonviolent actions in India. By the time of his conviction, Gandhi had become a national hero in South Africa and India, drawing huge crowds to hear him speak wherever he traveled. The British released Gandhi from prison in 1924, following surgery for appendicitis.
