Michael Palin crosses the Sahara through sand-seas, along rivers, through oases and over mountain ranges. In a place characterized by ceaseless travel, from camel caravans to car rallies, Palin's love of people sees him chatting with locals from countries many people know little about. Absolute Desert chronicles the third leg of his journey, from Timbuktu to the Republic of Niger. After learning about the Mali Empire, he joins the Wodaabe people, a cattle herding tribe with unique courtship rituals. At the Cure Salée, a nomadic networking festival, he joins Tuareg traders embarking on a salt caravan. For the next few weeks, he adopts their nomadic lifestyle and learns to respect the Sahara Desert as a matter of survival.
