The combination of the Viet Cong rebels' grisly guerilla warfare and the dense tropical terrain of Vietnam made U.S. operations there particularly difficult. Trained for large scale, more traditional fighting, soldiers often found themselves at the mercy of waterlogged deltas where leeches, rain, and intense heat crippled movement.
