Portier divides Judge's life into three parts. Beginnings treats his life to the his appointment to the Vincentian Alabama mission in 1915. The creative center, 1915-26, traces the beginnings of the sisters' community, with Mother Boniface Keasey as founding mother general; the founding of the Cenacle Bethlehem at Holy Trinity, Alabama; the building of the sisters' motherhouse there; and expansion into Puerto Rico. The times of trial and loss narrates the death of Bishop Edward P. Allen of Mobile and his replacement by Bishop Thomas Toolen, who came to view Judge as a fiscally irresponsible visionary; the effects of the Great Depression on the sisters' attempt to build a state-of-the-art hospital in Gadsden, Alabama; the destruction by fire of the sisters' motherhouse as Holy Trinity and the subsequent death of Mother Boniface at age 46 in what appears to have been an outbreak of typhoid; and Judge's own death in 1933, the ensuing turmoil in the men's community leading to an apostolic visitation from 1936 to 1949, and the beginnings of the renewal of the Cenacle's family spirit in the late 20th century.
