Maigret is called out to investigate the killing of an important wine distributor, who has stores all over France. M. Chabut has been killed in front of a house of assignation. Upon looking into the victim's life, he was thoroughly unlikeable. Does his obsession with having sex with other men's wives provide the motive, or is there something deeper at work? Who is the man who keeps shadowing Maigret? Complicating the investigation, is the horrible weather which causes Maigret to catch a cold. Maigret is thoroughly human, as are the criminals. Simenon is definitely worth revisiting.

A murder, numerous suspects, excellent chacterization, various motives, a typical Inspector Maigret mystery...very enjoyable, a 3 hour read
