The Ark of the Covenant is one of the greatest mysteries of ancient history. When God spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, He instructed the prophet to build an Ark of acacia wood and to place the Ten Commandments inside it. But even though the Ark was said to possess the power of life and death, the Hebrew Bible contains no record of its fate. Beginning with the earliest accounts in the Bible, the authors examine the royal cult of Zion under David and the kings who followed him, the destruction of the Temple and the Exile in Babylon, and Jewish legends that the Ark was buried beneath the Temple Mount or hidden in the tomb of Moses. They identify Muslim historians who reported the Ark at Mecca, and they visit the sacred tents of the Arabian desert. Above all, they investigate the truth of Ethiopian claims that the Ark was brought to Africa after the Queen of Sheba met King Solomon in Jerusalem, and that it still survives in the holy city of Aksum.
