The mysterious disappearance of treasure hunter and adventurer Maxwell Broadbent--along with his riches--sends his three sons on a search for their father, who has hidden himself and his treasures, in order to claim their inheritance.

McMillan Palgrave
"Greetings from the dead," declares Maxwell Broadbent on the videotape he left behind after his mysterious disappearance. A notorious treasure hunter and tomb robber, Broadbent accumulated over a half a billion dollars' worth of priceless art, gems, and artifacts before vanishing---along with his entire collection---from his mansion in New Mexico.

At first, robbery is suspected, but the truth proves far stranger: As a final challenge to his three sons, Broadbent has buried himself and his treasure somewhere in the world, hidden away like an ancient Egyptian pharaoh. If the sons wish to claim their fabulous inheritance, they must find their father's carefully concealed tomb.

The race is on, but the three brothers are not the only ones competing for the treasure. This secret is so astounding it cannot be kept quiet for long. With half a billion dollars at stake, as well as an ancient Mayan codex that may hold a cure for cancer and other deadly diseases, others soon join the hunt---and some of them will stop at nothing to claim the grave goods.
The bestselling coauthor of such page-turning thrillers as Relic and The Cabinet of Curiosities, Douglas Preston now spins an unforgettable tale of greed, adventure, and betrayal.

Adventurous novel about a treasure hunter an tomb robber who invites his sons over one in the pretense of the reading of the will and finds the home ransacked. In it they find a note from the father explaining how he is disappointed in them and that he has buried himself with his treasure and that it is their job to uncover the hiding place and that they will be the better for it. Before long the news gets out and you find there are other people searching for this site (including two pharmaceutical companies) for their own personal reasons: one of which is a codex - a thousand year-old mayan document that details the medicinal analysis of a varity of indigenous plants and animals beneficial to curing human diseases. If you like action-adventure this is novel for you - excellently written in the style of Indiana Jones. The writing was very desciptive and florid. Highly entertaining.

The Codex ---- by Douglas J. Preston c - 2004 ---- ---- This is the first novel of Douglas J. Preston's work I've had the pleasure to read. In the first few chapters I was wondering where this story would go. Then it became so surreal where he actually did go with my time!---- As it turned out the time was well spent, his writing is: Funny, Suspenseful, Full of high struggles with the Jungle and it's wildlife. Not to forget the Insects and Reptiles. ---- The Paid off Army Dudes learned some hard lessons, wanting: the money or artifacts, gold or jewels. ---- The family wanted far more than that and did get it. ---- kind of strange how we people will think we want one thing, then discover what is really needed and wanted. ---- Enjoy! ---- RichardPaul
