Silk Road is about half plot, a quarter sub-plot, and a quarter atmosphere building. The main plot is great, the sub-plots are annoying half the time, and the atmosphere building, while good, slows it down a bit. The atmosphere building should make the book more accessible to westerners who are inclined to get culture shock, so it definitely isn't a bad thing. This is a great book, if you read it while you have the patience for it.
