This is one of the best of Mary Balogh's stories. Gervase is very human, motivated by revenge but he's tempered by Morgan's innocence as he comes to know her. She is related to the man Gervase blames for his banishment but she was a child when it occurred. I hesitate to say more because I don't want to give away any surprises in the way the story unfolds. As painful as I found the story to read, Mary Balogh has the ability to make me care about the characters and this is a story I'll read over and over again.

It's been a long time since a romance novel made me cry but this one did. I enjoyed the chemistry between Gervase and Morgan. He was very well done. It was really quite sad to see him hiding all his pain with that rakish cover. Morgan was too mature for her age. I realize she was supposed to be one of those old souls but it was not convincing. Gervase however, made up for the lack of believability in her personality. This one goes onto my read again later list.
