Certainly not as concise as
De Bernieres' Birds Without Wings as far as the historical content goes (in this case it's Tito's Yugoslavia), but still: it gives you insights into what life might have been there at the time - and it's the story of two lonely individuals whose lives touch each other for a while.

This is a short read about a middle-aged man who meets up with woman from the former Yugoslavia and tells him of her stories of her life and how their relationship evolves over time. It was an interesting read with some interesting characters.
