It may be a mistake to first read the Olivia Goldsmith novel that inspired this female "buddy" flick--Brenda, the character played by Bette Midler, gets a radically hetero makeover here--but it's good mainstream entertainment nonetheless. Midler has strong chemistry with co-stars Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn. Hawn particularly has a wickedly good time parodying herself and probably most of that era's Hollywood actresses of a certain age...
...And speaking of Actresses of a Certain Age, Dame Maggie Smith is witty fun as an elegant First, Second and Third Wife who lends the ladies a knowing hand.

Annie (Diane Keaton) is seeing a marital therapist (Marcia Gay Harden) to deal with her separation from her manipulative husband Aaron, while raising a lesbian daughter and caring for her controlling elderly mother. Brenda (Bette Midler) is divorced from Morty, her cheap corporate husband who spends the money he's supposed to pay Brenda in child support on his materialistic egotistical girlfriend, Shelly (Sarah Jessica Parker), instead. Elise (Goldie Hawn) is an aging actress whose producer ex, Bill (Victor Garber), is taking her to the cleaners in their divorce settlement. All three are reunited when Cynthia, a divorcee of self-made riches and a mutual college friend of theirs, throws herself from her penthouse balcony a day after Cynthia's ex-husband remarries. In a way the comedy is bittersweet, considering the dark event that instigates it all. For me, it'll always be one of the delightful comedies of my youth. Such nostalgia. I personally love it, and so, I must recommend it.

The name basically says it all. Three women, all the first wives of their respective husbands, seek revenge on their exes that betrayed them in creative ways that only a spouse (or former spouse, that is) could know.
