Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin tales are widely acknowledged to be the greatest series of historical novels ever written. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of their beginning, with Master and Commander, these evocative stories are being re-issued in paperback with smart new livery. This is the eleventh book in the series.

Mr. O'Brian's efforts to write an espionage/legal thriller are hit and miss here, but on the whole the book makes for an interesting interlude to the endless voyages, chases and broadsides of some of the preceding volumes. I for one wish more time could have been spent on the trial and/or Maturin's relationship with Diana, hopefully these themes will be further exploted in "The Letter of Marque".
