The movie is very well done but the director or the N. American distributor (or both) should be faulted for releasing this w/ English language subtitles that are, at best, fair. The subtitles are tiny, white and sometimes very hard-to-read. Expect to sit very close to your monitor, screen, DVD player, etc.
SPL should return these to the distributor and ask to have them replaced w/ accessible, readable, patron-friendly English language sub-titles.

This is the original of "Hello Dolly," and, for my money, the better of the two. Thornton Wilder liked to break the "fourth wall," so we get a lot of direct narration and explanation from the characters. But there is a great deal of wit in the original, that was missed when they went for the music and spectacle. One of Shirley MacLaine's early parts, and Anthony Perkins gets a part that isn't a psychopath.
