Back in the day if you were a leading literary light you took a stab at writing children's novels. E. B. White did it with Charlotte's Web, and this is James Thurber's children's classic, a book that one of today's literary greats, Neil Gaiman, has called "the best book ever written." And it's pretty darn good. Reads almost like a long poem, is a weird original fairy tale and quest story, and is ancestor to Kate DiCamillo's The Tale of Despereaux.

The wicked Duke in this tale is very wicked indeed. I suppose the dark parts of the story didn't bother me as a kid because I had absolute confidence that evil could be defeated. Good to reread as an adult.

A totally delightful book suitable for both children and adults. A fairy tale that works on many levels.

Remember laughter. You’ll need it even in the blessed isles of Ever After.
