This book is about the author's love affair with his cottage and the salmon river beside it, and the rainforest magic of Haida Gwaii, as the Queen Charlottes are also known. Among its many delights are spectacular wildlife, birds, the moss-hung rainforests, the many miles of empty beaches and more.

I love this book, and the author. I grew up reading Jim's books, "Nuki" was the first. His respect for the cultures of his focus is profound. Reading this particular book is like escaping to a hideaway through a true elder. I recommend "Hideaway", as a way to the Haida. Other greats are his memoirs, "Confessions Of An Igloo Dweller" & "Zigzag", also "Spirit Wrestler", "The White Dawn"... For children, he's written many... I miss him.
