Entertaining novel. A good read. Has a small amount of very descriptive sexual acitivity. The overall storyline is fascinating.

Book 1 of the Lords of the Underworld series, followed by the Darkest Kiss. Sexy story of Ashlyn Darrow, a human who was born with the ability/curse to hear all past conversations in places she visits and Maddox, the Lord of the Underworld, and the keeper of "Violence". We meet all of the lords in this book and their demons. They are immortals living in Budapest and each one is plagued, but hopefully all will find their salvation in the women they will meet and fall in love with. A great start to the series.

I love the characters in this book I just dont like the writing style I was expecting something dark and it wasnt everything that should have been bad was sugar coated to make seem like it wasnt so bad.

I read this novel before reading J.R. Ward's Eternal Lover and I thought that J.R. Ward had plagarized the idea from Showalter. Apparently it is the other way around. Too bad. I really did like this book better than Eternal Lover because the male character Maddox was more consistent than the male character Rhage in Eternal Lover. This book got me hooked on the series and like most, the first three books are the best and then it begins to feel way too formulaic.

Gena Showalter’s new series Lords of the Underworld is great (although I can’t help thinking of South Park episode Season 4 Episode 51 every time I say Lords of the Underworld.) The premise for the series is that back in ancient Greece the Gods had a troop of warriors. One day the Gods took a box with all the evil beasties inside it and gave it to Pandora to guard. The warriors got angry that the box was not entrusted to them so they opened it. As punishment each of the warriors has a demon from the box living inside them: disease, disaster, misery, doubt, hope, defeat, lies, secrets, wrath, promiscuity, distrust, violence, death and pain and each of them is going to find a special lady. I can’t wait for Disease to get his own book; that should prove interesting. For now there are three books out: Darkest night #1, Darkest Kiss #2, and Darkest pleasure #3, but don’t read too quickly, the next book in the series is slotted for 2009. Staff picks 2008

By day, immortal warrior Maddox lives among his fellow Lords Of The Underworld in their Budapest castle as they try to stay away from the human world, for their demon companions urge them to do all manner of evil. However by night, Maddox is doomed to die a painful, terrible death and spend his time in hell's inferno. Centuries ago Maddox and his immortal brothers released the horde of demons from Pandora's box and as punishment, the gods cursed the warriors to each host a demon inside themselves. Maddox is the Keeper of Violence! When strangers are detected trying to invade their compound, the Lords believe they are Hunters, who want to destroy them, so Maddox is sent to kill them, for there is no greater warrior. Ashlyn Darrow is with a team from the World Institute of Parapsychology, who is in Budapest to investigate paranormal beings. Ashlyn was born with an ability to stand in one location and hear every conversation that has ever taken place there, which has been a nightmare for her. She'd do anything to stop the voices! When Maddox finds Ashlyn in the woods, even though he thinks she's Bait sent by the Hunters to entrap him, he is instantly drawn to her. For Ashlyn, being around Maddox is a miracle since the voices she constantly hears have suddenly ceased, as if they are as afraid of him as she should be! Maddox cannot help himself and takes her home with him, where the two will find themselves edging closer to a soul-searing test of love. Will this cursed couple be able to overcome great odds to be together?
