THE WAR, a new seven-part documentary series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, explores the history and horror of the Second World War from an American perspective by following the fortunes of so-called ordinary men and women who become caught up in one of the greatest cataclysms in human history.Six years in the making, this epic 14-hour film focuses on the stories of citizens from four geographically distributed American towns - Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and the tiny farming town of Luverne, Minnesota. These four communities stand in for - and could represent - any town in the United States that went through the war's four devastating years. Individuals from each community take the viewer through their own personal and quite often harrowing journeys into war, painting vivid portraits of how the war dramatically altered their lives and those of their neighbors, as well as the country they helped to save for generations to come.

Ken Burns is great but this one is long and boring and overwrought with sentimentality . Many superior documentarys on WWII have been done already so why did he rehash the same shit ??

One of the best films I have seen in this year. It was entertaining and interesting. Great performances a must see for all. “Truly a really great movie worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box”.

I greatly appreciate the inclusion of the story of what happened to the Japanese-Americans on the West Coast during the Second World War.

Ken Burns is in a class by himself. So thorough, very real, often poignant. (I still think his "Civil War" series is his masterpiece. We own it).

Once again Ken Burns film making has created a record of a time and a people that ring so completely true it is as if you are there. Quite a feat of time travel. Excellent coverage of this horrific time that includes first person accounts of the home front and the fighting and prisioner of war camps. Each part of the story is seen through the eyes of four towns and the citizens that fought and the citizens that stayed at home. Amazing full color film is insterseprsed with black and white to convey the true horror of the war that shaped a generation no matter where they were.
