Haunted by his dreams of the Masai, Tim Curtiz journeys to East Africa to research and write a screenplay about the enigmatic Claudia Cohn-Casson, an early anthropologist betrayed to the SS upon her return to France during the War

Blackwell North Amer
In his new book Justin Cartwright turns his attention to the preoccupations of urban man, highlighted against the startling backdrop of the African wilderness.
Haunted by dreams of the Masai, Tim Curtiz travels to Africa to write a screenplay about an early anthropologist, the beautiful and shadowy Claudia Cohn-Casson, betrayed to the SS on her return to France during World War II. He is drawn to her story by its ambiguities and mysteries, and by the unmistakable irony in the contrast between the supposedly savage society she was recording in Africa and the atrocities she experienced in Europe. Dark and turbulent strains of sexuality and betrayal link the lives of Curtiz and his subject as the story moves irresistibly toward its conclusion, in which myth, memory, reality and the imagination are fused in a literary tour de force.

A journalist travels to East Africa to write a screenplay about a French anthropologist who studied and was involved in the life of the Masai. She returns to Paris just before the end of the war and was sent to Auschwitz. The story is the journalist's investigation into her life and relationships and how her presence was unintentionally negative for the Masai, who are contrasted with the collaboration and savagery taking place in Europe. Parts of the book are written as the screenplay. It was an interesting idea, but somehow intellectually crude.
