This book & The Blood Star were author's best works because it wasn't usual ancient civilization, it was ruthless to stay in power & it resided in today's Iraq.
Author did his homework.
Military battles & palace plots were great.
Protagonist specialized in infantry after bloody campaign.
Greeks & Persians aka Medes were in beginning of their historical cycle.
Lose-lose on ISIS on destroying their culture & history including Assyrian artifacts.

A fulfilling epic ,.. on a scale with Shogan, but more ancient. Very well written !

A strong, moving, full-bodied epic, filled with larger-than-life characters. Action mixed with huge drama.
